QTL involved in fruit morphology in tomato.

IN contrast to their wild relatives carrying small and round fruits, the cultivated species of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) carry fruit that vary from round to elongated, pear-shape or bell pepper shaped. The objective of this work is to provide an overview of major and minor loci controlling different fruit morphology characters. For this purpose, tomato fruits were analyzed using new software program TOMATO ANALYZER. Fruit from two F2 populations were analyzed. Both derived from the cross between two varieties of S. lycopersicum (Opalka and Sausage) carrying elongated fruit and S. pimpinellifolium LA1589 carrying small and round fruits. Fruit shape in both varieties is rather similar but it is controlled differently. The major effect on fruit shape index, the ratio of fruit height to width, was due to sun and ovate in Opalka and Sausage, respectively. In addition the results showed that many minor QTL were involved in different fruit shape attributes. QTL of smaller effect were detected in the same regions for both populations in chromosome 1 and 8. In this work, novel attributes implemented in TOMATO ANALYZER were tested. The eccentricity attributes relate to how asymmetric a fruit is. The obovoid and ovoid attributes were measured only in the Sausage population since this trait was segregating in the population. A major QTL was detected in chromosome 2 for both traits. However, the QTL was located in the same region as ovate for the obovoid character while for the ovoid trait the QTL was located close to fw2.2 . The additive effects were derived from S. lycopersicum parent. Internal fruit shape, which also measures the degree of asymmetry, was analyzed as well and QTL located in chromosome 2 and 8 were detected.
