Comparative leaf anatomical studies on Aureliana fasciculata (Vell.) Sendtner var fasciculata and Aureliana angustifolia Alm.-Lafetá.

AURELIANA, a solanaceous neotropical genus, encompasses nine taxa all of wich are found in central-western, southeastern and southern Brazil. These plants have been scarcely studied on chemical point of view and parsimoniously they have their biological activities evaluated. Howerver, some metabolites isolated from Aureliana species showed to be potent growth inhibitors of human pathogenic microorganisms. A. fasciculata var. fasciculata and A. angustifolia were collected in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, in order to do a comparative study of their leaf anatomy. Fresh material was preserved in FAA. Transverse sections were obtained with a Ranvier microtome. The sections stained with safranin and astrablau were mounted on glass slides. For observation epidermal characteristics, leaf scrapings were prepared, stained with safranin in 50% ethanol and mounted on microscope slides. The analyses of epidermal leaves showed cells with sinuous walls in adaxial surface for both taxa, however, this character is much more pronounced in A. angustifolia. Multicellular simple trichomes and glandular trichomes are sparsely distributed on abaxial surface in both taxa. Hypostomatic leaves with laterocyclic stomata are present in A. angustifolia, nevertheless, A. fasciculata var. fasciculata showed anisocytic, paracytic and staurocytic stomata on abaxial epidermis and few anomocytic stomata on adaxial surface. Druses are common in the palisade cells in A. fasciculata var. fasciculata, but they are absent in A. angustifolia. Leaf cross-sections showed the epidermis with a single layer cells and dorsiventral mesophyll at both taxa. A. angustifolia presented folded cells in the palisade parenchyma and a thick cuticle on the epidermis, but such features were not observed in A. fasciculata var. fasciculata. Concerning the vascular system, the phloem appears at both sides of the xylem in the midvein, for the both taxa. These results showed that anatomical leaf characters are an useful tool for the taxonomy of Aureliana species.
