Solanum Taxonomy - Morning Benitez, Carmen Emilia [1]. Anatomy of the epidermis foliar in the species Group Solanum nudum of Solanum section Geminata (Solanaceae). SOLANUM section Geminata comprise ca. 130 species of shrubs and small trees ranging from Mexico to Argentina. The species have been divided into 16 species Group which 12 are represented in Venezuela with 34 species growing in cloud forest understory, gallery and ripariam forest and disturbed areas. The species Group of Solanum nudum in Venezuela is composed up of Solanum aphyodendron, S. campaniforme, S. nudum and S. tepuiense. The leaf epidermal surfaces of these species were investigated in order to value diagnostic characters useful as a source of data in the taxonomy. It represent a part of my ongoing study of the anatomy of foliar epidermis in species of the section Geminata in Venezuela. The following criteria were evaluated and illustrated: variations in epidermal cells; type, dimension and location of stomata; presence, type, length, location and density of trichomes. Results show differences in some anatomical characteristics between species. The epidermal cells are variously shaped with straight, arcuate, wavy or sinuous walls. Stomata are either mainly anisocytic or staurocytic. The species investigated are amphistomatic. The trichomes are either glandular or eglandular. The glandular have unicellular or multicellular head and the eglandular may be simple uni or multicellular and branched. The significance of these variable features are discussed in this work, in relation to other species group of Solanum section Geminata.
