Potato Genomics - Afternoon Korotkov, Eugene [1], Skryabin, Konstantin [1]. Latent amino acid periodicity of many protein families. WE have developed new mathematical method for search of latent periodicity in any symbolical sequence (1). We also created the method of noise decomposition, which is aimed to distinguish between different periodicity types of the same period length (2). Noise decomposition method is to be used in conjunction with the method of cyclic profile alignment, and this combination is able to reveal structure-related or function-related patterns of latent periodicity. With help of these two methods we identified latent periodicity in catalytic domains of approximately 85% of annotated serine–threonine and tyrosine protein kinases and NAD+ binding sites (2). Similar results were obtained for other 180 protein families and domains (3). The periodic structure of protein families can be used for determination of biological funcations of new amino acid sequences with very low probability of a mistake and for genome annonation. Summarizing, we presume that latent periodicity is the common property of most part of known catalytic protein domains and we work now for identification of the latent periodicity in 3000 protein families. 1.
