Solanum Taxonomy - Morning Granados-Tochoy, Juan Carlos [1], Bohs, Lynn [2], Nicole Myers, Nicole [2], Stephen Stern, Stephen [2]. Trees for Troublesome Taxa: A molecular phylogeny of Solanum section Geminata. SOLANUM section Geminata contains around 150 almost exclusively Neotropical species, making it one of the largest groups within the genus Solanum. These species are quite similar morphologically and have a very high diversity in much of Andean South America. Sequence data from the nuclear ITS and GBSSI genes as well as the chloroplast region trnT-F were obtained and analyzed phylogenetically for over 50 species of section Geminata representing all of the 16 species groups recognized in Knapp’s recent monograph of section Geminata. We used the phylogenies obtained from these analyses to test the monophyly of section Geminata and the species groups identified by Knapp and to explore the placement of several problematic taxa and relationships among Geminata clades. This study allows a framework for the examination of the evolution of morphological characters, such as the ovoid versus flattened seed morphologies found within the section, as well as evaluation of the geographic distribution of this section.
