Evaluation of an Economical Controlled Release Fertilizer for Potato Production on Irrigated Soils.

NITROGEN management is an important factor affecting potato production on coarse textured irrigated soils from both an economic and environmental standpoint. While controlled release fertilizers can reduce nitrate losses and have been available for many years, their cost was too high to justify use in potato production. Field experiments were conducted in 2004 and 2005 on a Hubbard loamy sand soil at the Sand Plain Research Farm in Becker, Minnesota to evaluate the effects of a polymer-coated urea fertilizer (ESN, Agrium, Inc. Canada) on yield and quality of Russet Burbank potato. The coated fertilizer (ESN) applied at 45, 135, 225, and 315 kg N/ha was compared with equivalent rates of urea. An additional 45 kg N/ha was applied as diammonium phosphate to all treatments except a zero N control. All ESN was applied as a band at planting except for one (in 2004) or two (in 2005) additional treatments at the 225 kg N/ha rate where the application was split between planting and emergence. All urea was split-applied between emergence and hilling. In addition, one (in 2005) or two (in 2004) post-hilling urea-ammonium nitrate treatments were included to simulate fertigation. In 2004, a leaching year, tuber yields increased with increasing N rates for both N sources. Yields tended to be higher with ESN compared with conventional urea at the two lower N rates and the same as urea at the higher N rates. Tuber size tended to be larger when fertilized with ESN compared with conventional urea. Tuber quality was not affected by N source or rate. In 2005, ESN applied in the band at planting tended to depress yields at the higher N rates compared with conventional urea. However, yields were higher with ESN than conventional urea when all the ESN was applied at emergence.
