Pepper - Afternoon Liu, Wing-Yee [1], Kang, Byoung-Cheorl [1], Jahn, Molly [1]. Comparative genetics of Phytophthora spp. resistance in solanaceous crop species. AN initial analysis of the comparative genetics of disease resistance in the Solanaceae suggested that resistance to Phytophthora spp. may occur in syntenic positions among solanaceous crop species; pepper, tomato and potato. With the aim of gathering available genetic resources in pepper for further comparative analysis, five independent pepper genetic maps were revised and aligned. Six previous QTL studies for Phytophthora capsici resistance in pepper were included in our analysis. 67 out of 79 published QTL could be located on the integrated map. QTL were consistently identified on pepper chromosomes P5, P6, P9 and P11. Three of these positions in Capsicum, that confer P. capsici resistance co-localized with positions established for NBS-LRR R gene clusters in potato for the con-generic pathogen species, P. infestans. The major pepper QTL for P. capsici resistance occurred in a region that corresponded to a major QTL against P. infestans in both potato and tomato. Furthermore, resistance to Phytophthora in potato and pepper co-occurred with nematode resistance in the three crops. These results suggest that resistance to Phytophthora spp. in two genera within the tribe Solanae may be derived from the same ancestral source and that resistance to nematodes may have been associated with this resistance preceding their divergence.
