The evolution and development of specialised epidermal cell types in stamens and petals of Solanum.

SPECIALISED epidermal cells play many important roles in flowering plants. The petals of many Angiosperm species contain conical epidermal cells, which focus light onto floral pigment, making petals appear brighter and feel warmer to pollinating insects. These conical petal cells are missing from many Solanum species. At the same time, similar conical cells and trichomes are found on the stamens of Solanum lycopersicum and related species, but not on the stamens of S. dulcamara and its close relatives. Investigation of these phenomena indicate that regulation of the expression pattern of a MYB transcription factor is responsible for variation in epidermal cell form, and thus in petal attractiveness and anther cone integrity, leading to variability with the genus Solanum.
