Yield and skin color response of Colorado red potatoes to 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid application.

TWO, four-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) has gained some acceptance for use in intensifying the periderm (skin) color in red potatoes, and in producing tubers that are more uniform in size at harvest. However, crop response may vary depending on variety and local conditions. Experiments were conducted at the San Luis Valley, in Colorado, to evaluate the effect of application of an ester of 2,4-D (weedone) on tuber yield, quality, and skin color of Sangre and Colorado Rose. A second experiment evaluated the effect of weedone application rate on yield and skin color of Cherry Red. Application of weedone reduced the yield of 10-16 oz tuber size in Sangre and Colorado Rose, but did not influence total yield or other tuber size profile. Sixty seven percent and 82% of the 4-16 oz tuber size in Sangre and Colorado Rose, respectively, were skewed towards the 4-10 oz tuber size profile. Plants that were sprayed with weedone produced tubers with no internal defects, but produced 0.3 and 1.0% more external defects in Sangre and Colorado Rose, respectively, when compared to the control. Application of weedone improved the skin color of Sangre but not Colorado Rose. Weedone application at 168 to 336 ml ha-1 did not influence tuber yield in Cherry Red. However, tuber skin color was significantly improved with weedone application. No difference was observed in tuber yield or skin color among the three application rates used. Results of this study indicate that Sangre and Cherry Red which have pink skin color benefit from weedone application than Colorado Rose which has an inherent dark red skin color. An application rate of 168 ml ha-1 is optimum for Cherry Red. Weedone application reduces the production of large tubers and skews tuber production towards small marketable size tubers.
