Monday Morning Plenary Session Genomics meets Biodiversity Davies, Howard [1]. Metabolomics: Applications in Functional Biodiversity Analysis in Potato. TRANSCRIPTOMICS, proteomics and metabolomics are increasingly used for broad scale comparative analysis in the life sciences, forming important components of systems approaches to biological problems. The presentation will focus on current applications of metabolomics in potato and will draw upon data generated in-house at the SCRI and in broader collaborations particularly within the EU Integrated Project “SAFEFOODS”. The SCRI houses the Commonwealth Potato Collection which has been genotyped and metabolomics is in use to assess the extent of compositional diversity both within wild accessions and in more domesticated genotypes. The assessment of “natural” variation using metabolomics has been extended to provide an indication of the impact of geographical location, crop management (e.g. high input, organic) and breeding systems (conventional, GM, protoplast fusion) on metabolite profiles. This will provide important information on, for example, the potential for unintended compositional changes in genetically modified potato and the extent to which such changes fall within the background of conventional breeding and production systems. Such data are important to policymakers, risk assessors, regulators and consumers. The technology is also proving extremely useful in providing direct comparisons between genotypes differentiated on the basis of important commercial traits e.g flavour, assisting the selection of appropriate targets for plant breeding. The approaches described above deal with the analysis of mature tubers but profiling has also been used to develop an understanding of changes in the metabolome associated with key stages in the tuber life cycle (tuberisation, tuber development and maturation, storage, sprouting etc). Temporal changes in metabolites will be important to the establishment of quality traits of commercial relevance. Log in to add this item to your schedule
