Potato disease development following inoculation with four Verticillium species.

VERTICILLIUM wilt of potatoes involves plant wilt, premature death and reduced tuber yield and quality. The aggressive pathogens Verticillium albo-atrum, Reinke & Berth and V. dahliae, Kleb., the weak pathogen V. tricorpus, Issac and V. albo-atrum Group 2 a weak pathogen morphologically similar to V. albo-atrum were used to studied the effects of aggressive or aggressive and weak pathogen inoculations on disease development. Co-inoculations of weak and aggressive pathogens had less foliar wilt than with inoculations of aggressive pathogens only. When weak pathogens were inoculated four days prior to inoculation with aggressive pathogens, foliar wilt levels were lower than when weak and aggressive pathogens were inoculated at the same time. Co-inoculation with weaker pathogens did not always reduce the population levels of the aggressive pathogens. However, with time delayed inoculations, the weaker pathogens were sometimes able to establish higher population levels than the aggressive pathogens and foliar wilt symptoms were reduced as compared to the single pathogen inoculation and the same day combined pathogen inoculation. Aspects of these causal agent interactions on disease development and pathogen occurrence are examined.
