Monday Afternoon Morphology and Taxonomy Bohs, Lynn [1]. The genus Solanum: views from the trees and the roots. SOLANUM, with approximately 1500 species, is the largest genus in the Solanaceae and one of the largest genera of flowering plants. Solanum is especially notable for its morphological and ecological diversity and for its economic importance to mankind. Taxonomic work on Solanum has been hindered by its huge size and by its largely tropical distribution, but large-scale efforts are underway to clarify the systematics of Solanum using varied approaches. A top-down approach uses molecular phylogenetics to identify the major clades within Solanum and to examine evolutionary relationships and monophyly of its component lineages. A bottom-up approach aims to discover, describe, and define all species of Solanum, culminating in a complete species-level taxonomic treatment of the genus. Recent results using both of these approaches will be summarized, giving a progress report on our knowledge of Solanum. Log in to add this item to your schedule
