Solanum tuber-bearing species behaviour against the false root-knot nematode Nacobbus aberrans.

NACOBBUS aberrans is a major pest of the potatoes in Andean regions of Argentina, Bolivia and Perú, parasitizing numerous weed and horticultural species. It is endemic to northwest Argentina and it is found also in lowland areas in other regions, but it is unknown whether any population from the southeast of Buenos Aires parasitizes potato. Wild Solanum species and Andean potato cultivars are important sources of resistance against many diseases and pests. The screening of potato germplasm, to detect sources of resistance to false root-knot nematode and its use in breeding programs, provide an effective and economical method for solving this problem, but require nematode race identification. In order to evaluate the behavior of different tuber-bearing species against N. aberrans, eleven Andean potato cultivars and nine accessions of S. acaule, S.infundibuliforme and S. megistacrolobum were evaluated utilizing a population from Coctaca, province of Jujuy (3500 m). The cultivars ‘Spunta’, ‘Kennebec’ and ‘Frital INTA’, were evaluated utilizing a population from Mar del Plata, province of Buenos Aires (24 m). Presence and number of galls and individuals were recorded and races determined. The results show that the N .aberrans population from Coctaca corresponds to race 2 and the Andean cultivar ‘Azul’, one genotype of S. megistacrolobum and two of S. acaule, presented the best behavior against this population. On the other hand, the N. aberrans population from Mar del Plata belongs to the sugarbeet group and did not parasitize the commercial cultivars.
