Genetic structure of the European S. dulcamara with emphasis on its potential role in the epidemiology of potato late blight.

WOODY nightshade (Bittersweet) (Solanum dulcamara) is an herbaceous perennial plant commonly present in The Netherlands. It might be a host for the Phytophthora infestans, the pathogen that causes late blight (LB) in cultivated potato. Recently two reports describing infection of S. dulcamara appeared (Flier et al., 2003; Cooke et al., 2002). However, still little is known about the role of S. dulcamara in the late blight epidemiology. In order to investigate this relationship, a study on the genetic structure of a collection of S. dulcamara from Europe is carried out. A core set will be tested for LB resistance in the field. Also, studies are planned to disclose the epidemiological role that S. dulcamara populations may have in areas of organic potato production.
