The development of tomato trichomes and the role of AmMIXTA-like genes.

TRICHOMES are hair-like structures on the epidermal tissues of plants, and are present on many organs and in many different forms. Their main function is to deter potential predators, although they also help to ameliorate environmental conditions. Tomato plants produce at least five different types of trichomes, some with glandular heads and some without. All are multicellular. We are interested in the development of trichomes in tomato. We have analysed the development of wild type trichomes and those in a number of mutants, using scanning electron microscopy. We are also investigating the interactions between genes though double mutant analysis. We are also investigating the role of genes similar to the MIXTA gene of Antirrhinum majus. Ectopic expression of AmMIXTA in tobacco and Antirrhinum causes the development of excess glandular trichomes. We are therefore investigating the consequences of ectopic expression of AmMIXTA in tomato. We have also identified a very similar sequence from tomato, which we call SlMIXTA. We are using transgenic approaches to investigate the consequences of ectopic expression and suppression of SlMIXTA. Overall, we hope to develop a better picture of the differentiation of the complex trichomes of tomato.
