Chemotaxonomic Investigation of Species of Solanum section Brevantherum Seithe (Solanaceae).

SOLANUM sect. Brevantherum comprises about 28 species of shrubs to small trees ranging from Mexico to Argentina. Our phytochemical and taxonomic investigations on Solanum led us to investigate the fruits of some species of this section. Solanum asperum Rich. yielded in addition to the commercially important alkaloid, solasodine, a new spirosolane alkaloid, solaparnaine, having an OH function at C-27 of ring E. Since its isolation in 1985, solaparnaine has not been reported from any other species of Solanum, so far. Recently, however, we detected solaparnaine along with solasodine in the fruits of Solanum stipulaceum Roem. & Schult., another species of the section Brevantherum. The detection of solaparnaine in another member of this section tempts us to speculate this compound as a possible taxonomic marker for this section. In an attempt to provide more evidence in support of this possibility, we are continuing our investigation on these plants. Thus, a detailed investigation on the alkaloid content of the stems and leaves of S. asperum and S. stipulaceum in our laboratory yielded solasonine and three glycoalkaloids, so far. The structural details as well as their chemotaxonomic significance will be presented. Financial support: CAPES, CNPq, IMSEAR and RENORBIO.
