Abstract Detail

Solanum Taxonomy - Morning

Agra, Maria de Fátima [1].

Taxonomy of Solanum section Erythrotrichum Child (Solanaceae).

SOLANUM section Erythrotrichum Child treated here consists of 22 neotropical species ranging from Guatemala to South of Brazi, Bolívia and Paraguay. This work summarizes our recent taxonomic treatment of section Erythrotrichum based on morphological studies. It was carried out by an extensive study of herbarium specimens (including all types) and plants in field observations. Members of this section form a distinctive South American and presumably monophyletic group comprising species with a combination of morphological characters, which include: plurifoliate sympodia; prickles of the stems laterally compressed at the base and recurved at the apex; ferruginous to reddish indument with stellate-glandular trichomes; sex expression andromonoecious; berry with 1-2 cm in diameter, 4-locular, with a leathery and glandular pubescent exocarp at maturity. Our results define two groups: 1) a with eight species containing elliptic to oval-elliptic leaves, branched inflorescences and white corollas, and 2) a group of 15 species containing mainly ovate to cordate leaves, unbranched inflorescences, lilac, purple and blue corollas. The set of morphological characters are consistent to differentiate the two group at subsectional level. Morphological variations, possible affinities, distribution, habitat preferences and altitude ranges of the all taxa will be discussed. FINANCIAL SUPPORT: CNPq.
