Utilization and Marketing Nwosu, Maria Obiageli [1]. Ethnobotany and Medicine of Some members of the Solanaceae of Southern Nigeria. THE ethnobotany and medicine of some members of the Solanaceae of Southern Nigeria are discussed in this paper.The three vegetables tomato, pepper and eggplant all belong to the Solanaceae or the nightshade family. This important family also contains potato, petunia, Datura,spp.,tobacco, and other species of Nicotiana, as well as belladonna. As a group most members of this family have found wide ethnobotanical and medicinal uses among the indigenes of Southern Nigeria. Prominent among these are Solanum melongena (eggplant),Solanum aethiopicum (used as vegetable and against Diabetes mellitus because of low sugar content Capsicum frutescens,("Nsukka pepper"),spice for nursing mothers; trial by ordeal( in criminal cases), Datura metel,(antedote for snake bite);Nicotiana tabacum (treatment for caries,toothache; dermatological,and rheumatic problems.
