Solanum Taxonomy - Morning Janick, Jules [1], Whipkey, Anna [2], Daunay, Marie-Christine [3], Jullian, Evelyne [3], Paris, Harry [4]. Development of an Image Database of Solanaceae. THE systematic collection of crop iconography would be an invaluable resource to crop researchers providing significant information on subjects such as crop evolution, lost traits, and genetic dispersal. To this end a project (Crop Image) is being organized to assemble a searchable database of crop images starting with the Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae. Searches have been made from various sources including art (mosaics, paintings, and sculpture), illustrated manuscripts, hand illuminated and printed herbals. We are concentrating our search on antiquity (New and Old World), medieval, and Renaissance sources but we do not exclude modern images. Associated with each image is bibliographic information on primary and secondary sources and in the case of herbals, associated text material will eventually be included. We anticipate that all Solanaceae researchers will contribute images and information so that the database will be a living dynamic document.
