Abstract Detail

Coffee Genomics - Morning

Montagnon, Christophe [1].

Molecular diversity studies in coffee.

COFFEE trees belong to the tribe Coffea in the family Rubiacea. Coffea consists of 100 taxa identified so far in African and Madagascarian intertropical forests of which two species have an economic importance : C. arabica and C. canephora. Since the late eighties, molecular diversity studies, using a wide range of markers, have helped understanding the genetic structure of Coffea but also the genetic structure of C. arabica and C. canephora. A review of these studies will be given. The structure of Coffea genus and of both species are linked to geographical patterns. Molecular diversity studies allowed to speed up genetic progress through the design of comprehensive breeding systems as examplified in the communication. The issue of saving coffee genetic ressources endangered in African forests will also be discussed.
