Coming up soon: Breeding By Design.

IN future variety development programs, we expect that the breeder will compose desired superior genotypes in silico, an approach which we have called ‘Breeding by DesignTM’. This will be feasible because for many agronomically important traits, we can determine the precise map position of the underlying genes, the interaction between those loci, and the allelic variation at these loci together with their phenotypic values. Subsequently, the desired genotypes can be generated using easy-to-assay molecular markers and breeding scheme designer software. The presentation will report on recent advances in molecular marker technology, such as CRoPSTM and Single Feature Polymorphisms (SFP), which provide opportunities to develop refined mapping strategies based on whole genome LD mapping using marker haplotypes. Complementary to this approach, an effective method for fine mapping QTL, called QIR analysis, will also be presented. The CRoPS technology is covered by patent applications owned by Keygene N.V.. Trademark registration has been filed for Breeding By Design and CRoPS. References BUNTJER, J. B., SORENSEN, A. P., PELEMAN J.D.
