Development of CMV Resistance Marker and Molecular Breeding in Pepper.

CUCUMBER mosaic virus (CMV) is one of the most severe pathogens in pepper (Capsicum) all over the world. Due to the complex nature of the bio-assay, the progress of breeding is very slow. There have been a few sources of the resistance against CMV, and there is no commercial variety containing perfect resistance. Perennial is one of the well known sources. The CMV resistance from Perennial inherits as QTL. Here we have found a new genotype (C. annum, inbred line "FP11") harboring a perfect resistance to various field collected strains of CMV. The genotypes of 84 F2 plants were determined by inoculation of F3 progenies, and it turned out that the CMV resistance introduced from FP11 was inherited as a single gene. Bulked segregation analysis identified one RAPD marker linked to CMV resistance. This marker was converted to co-dominant CAPS marker, named "cmvR1". Various sources of breeding populations, a total of over 3 thousands samples (hot pepper, C. annum), supplied from several breeding companies were tested for the presence of CMV resistance using the marker cmv-R1. It also matched well with sweet pepper (C. annum) and Habanero (C. chinense). We are willing to disclose this marker "cmvR1" to everybody who want to improve pepper variety through a MAS program.
