SPUDPRO, a Wisconsin Tool for Potato Variety Testing and Promotion.

BREEDING programs that have goals to influence crop production and related industries require effective means to deliver new genetic lines for testing, evaluation and adoption. In 1999 SPUDPRO was initiated as a Wisconsin program to make possible a consistent movement of advanced potato breeding lines from the University of Wisconsin (UW) into growers and industry hands. SPUDPRO includes 1) an advisory committee consisting of industry and university personnel 2) a production scheme for Foundation potato seed tubers, 3) funding from grower check-off dollars. The principal objective of SPUDPRO is to maintain communication between the Wisconsin Potato Breeding program and industry groups so that successful new varieties emerge in an efficient manner. This program allows meaningful and timely input from industry as elite lines move through the breeding scheme toward release. Promoted lines undergo meristem cleaning, mini-tuber production and field production in the Wisconsin Foundation Seed Potato system before being sold to growers. Seven lines have been identified in the last seven years with four delivered into producer hands by April 2006. SPUDPRO also serves as forum for the UW to establish equitable and cooperative licensing policy for lines submitted to U.S. Plant Variety Protection.
