Tobacco - Morning

Burke, Mark [1], Lommel, Steve [1], Opperman, Charles [1].

High Performance Bioinformatics Platform of the Tobacco Genome Initiative.

WHILE the cost of sequencing is steadily decreasing the overall value of the data is proportional to the effectiveness of the analysis strategy. The problems encountered in data analysis and management is directly related to the shear volume of data currently available, the continued influx of that data, and the computational requirements necessary to effectively perform analysis. It became apparent that the availability solutions addressing these challenges is significantly lacking. Considering genome sequencing efforts require flexible computational environments to facilitate, expedite and maximize the value of data analysis we constructed our own solution. Our high performance computational environment is easy to use, flexible, expandable and capable of being accessed securely from anywhere there is network access. The environment is multi-operating system environment integrated by a single secure access portal. Once the user is within our secure environment they are able to make use of tools on a variety of platforms. In addition to the underlying hardware environment we have developed a work-flow based analysis pipeline and relational database with the capability to be easily enhanced as more sophisticated technology becomes available. Our software offers the ability to the general researcher to integrate existing public data with locally generated data in one contiguous database. This has the capacity to quickly generate currently unknown novel relationships.
