Breeding and Genetics Bizimungu, Benoit [1], Chen, Qin [1]. Evaluation of interspecific hybrid derivatives possessing disease resistance traits for potential use in a potato breeding program. WILD Solanum species represent an excellent source of diversity and genes necessary to improve the cultivated potato, S. tuberosum L. A number of accessions with resistance to Verticillium wilt, late blight and Colorado potato beetle were previously identified at the Lethbridge Research Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. However, their use in potato breeding may be limited by the absence of tuberization under long days and the transmission of undesirable traits, which require a time-consuming evaluation and selection process in order to restore the cultivated improved phenotype. In order to reduce time and efforts for cultivar development, only genotypes possessing a combination of valuable traits should be used in breeding. The objective of this study was to characterize a number of progenies derived from sexual or somatic hybridization between potato cultivars or elite selections and wild potato species including S. chacoense, S. cardiophyllum and S. pinnatisectum possessing disease resistance (Verticillium wilt, late blight, Colorado potato beetle) in order to identify the best parents to use in backcrossing to S. tuberosum. Hybrid progenies were evaluated in the field to determine the tuberization, tuber traits and morphological traits. S. chacoense derivatives used in crosses were duplex for Vc gene conditioning resistance to Verticillium wilt, which ensures that nearly all of their progeny are resistant, thus avoiding the need to screen for resistance. Useful variation for morphological and tuber traits was found in disease resistant interspecific hybrid derivatives, which warrants their utilization in breeding.
