THE effect of different hill shapes and time of nitrogen (N) fertilizer application on N use efficiency was assessed during two separate, but related, three-year potato (variety Russet Burbank) experiments on a Plainfield loamy sand at Hancock, WI, USA. A split plot design was used with hill shape (shaped-plateau, pointed, or standard) as the main plots and N rates (0, 134, 201, and 268 kg N/ha) as the split plots with four replications in randomized complete blocks. The timing experiment provided N applications at 1) one-third at emergence and two-thirds at tuberization; 2) one-third at emergence, one-half at tuberization, and one-sixth at tuberization plus 20 days; and 3) one-third at emergence, one-third at tuberization, and one-sixth each at tuberization plus 20 and 40 days. Potato yield and quality data for 2002 and 2003 were affected by hill shape with less N needed to optimize yield and quality where the hills were shaped. Fewer differences were seen in 2004. For all growing seasons, an overall increase in potato yield and quality was observed when N was applied with three applications irrespective of hill shape. As expected, N use efficiency as measured by petiole nitrate and tuber N uptake showed more recovered nitrate where hills were more blocky. As time of hill formation may be influencing these results, root pruning may be an influencing factor. Results of this study have shown that more blocky hills with N fertilizer applied at three different times within the growing season can significantly improve potato yield and quality on these sandy soils.
