Taxonomy of Solanum section Regmandra.

A taxonomic revision of Solanum section Regmandra has been completed as part of the PBI worldwide monograph of Solanum. Section Regmandra contains 8 species that grow in the coastal lomas regions of Chile and Peru. Many of the species have characteristic pinnate or bipinnate leaves, and much of the variation lies in their shape. In contrast, floral and fruit characters exhibit much less variation between species. Species delimitation was particularly problematic for Solanum montanum from Peru. This species is notable for the swollen roots, superficially similar to potatoes. However, extensive study of herbarium specimens and of plants in the field indicates that Solanum montanum is conspecific with Solanum phyllanthum. I discuss the quantitative nature of the variation and how we are attempting to characterize this variation using image analysis.
