Translational Genomics - Morning Tellez, Clara [1], Castillo, Genis [2], Chacon, Maria [3]. Molecular characterization of a germplasm collection of goldenberry (Physalis peruviana L.) native to the Colombian Andes and evolution under cultivation. IT is well known that, historically, humans cultivated and domesticated several dozens of plant species that were later abandoned or neglected. Among these early domesticates are many fruit crops in the Neotropics which have the potential to become international commodities. The goldenberry (Physalis peruviana) is one of these neglected crops that originated in the Andes and have been grown in Colombia for many thousands of years. Ironically, South Africa is today one of the main producers of goldenberry in the world and hence its name Cape Gooseberry. The goldenberry market is increasingly growing in Europe and more recently in the United States and the Colombian goldeberry has the potential to become a major export for its brighter and sweeter berries. In spite of its growing importance, there has not been a systematic collection and characterization of the genetic diversity of the Colombian goldenberry on its several domestication stages (wild, weedy, traditional varieties, commercial varieties). In this project we propose to expand the ex-situ collections of wild, weedy and cultivated goldenberry in Colombia, evaluate several morphological traits of agronomic importance and study the genetic structure and the origin of the cultivated populations. We will show preliminary results on the collection of goldenberry in the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia, a poorly studied region, the development of microsatellite markers by cross-amplification of SSR loci from Physalis philadelphica, and the development of chloroplast DNA markers by means of sequencing. The domestication status of the goldenberry in Colombia and its uses based on field observations and the utility of the new molecular markers for evolution and domestication studies will be discussed.
