The USA-Brazil Innovative Idea of Exporting Only Sprouts as a By-product of High-Grade Seed-Potato Production: Some Advances and Challenges.

FOR enhancing seed-potato field multiplication rate, most Brazilian seed-potato producers would break off apical sprouts (de-sprout) from high grade, imported seed-potato tubers. Nearly 20 years ago, a recommendation was made to shift the destiny of their tons of sprouts from garbage cans to seedbeds, under aphid-proof screenhouses; producing an additional (190%) high-grade, virus-free, seed-potato minituber stock, in a feasible and suitable manner (Souza-Dias & Costa, Summa Phytopath. 11:52, 1985). From mid 90´s, the recommended use of sprouts as seed-potato became not only a new way of large scale/ low cost seed-potato minitubers production, but also, a new source of income to small farmers, who were contracted by seed-potato producers (Souza-Dias et al, AJPR. Vol.78. 2001). As this innovative business idea expanded, official seed-potato certificating restrictions were imposed, mainly due to an alleged sprout intractability. This restriction has been solved (“Brazil Ministery of Agriculture Service Instructions CSM/DFIA/SDA/MAPA No. 02/05-April 19,2005) following a successful 3-year experimental evaluation of Alaska-USA imported sprouts, under Brazilian quarantine officials (Souza-Dias & Campbell, AJPR. 83:100. 2006). The sprout/seed-potato has been considered a new exporting by-product of the conventional high-grade tuber/seed-potato production system. For its innovative concept, the sprouts/seed-potato idea was nominated, by an international jury, for the “Innovation Award” prize at the Potato Congress in Emmeloord-Holland (www.potato2005.com). “What disadvantages this sprout/seed-potato exporting system have shown?” To answer this intriguing question, made by the jury, has been a challenge, so far.
