ADVANCES IN THE STUDY OF SOME GROUPS OF SOLANACEAE FROM COLOMBIA: New species and systematics.

THE Solanaceae family in Colombia is represented by 300-400 species, distributed in different climatic environments, mainly of the  Andean region.   One of the most diversified  groups is Solanum, sect. Geminata with an estimated 50 species. A phylogenetic study based on intergenic spacers trnT, trnL, the nuclear GBSSI and ITS region, was performed in cooperation with the international PBI Solanum project. The section was found to be monophyletic, each clade is discussed according to the evolutionary role of some morphological characters. Another diversified  group is Solanum subgenus Leptostemonum with 50 species, including six new records. The Solanum sect. Brevantherum is represented by four subsections, including 12 species. However, the section is not clearly defined and some species are of confused morphology, new morphological characters, such as seeds, are used in the study, and molecular data will be used to define the section and establish relationships among subsections. The current circumscription and composition of Solanum sect.n Herpystichum is doubtful, new morphological characters are analyzed in species of the section and also in species of other sections where they were previously included. Lycianthes has 16 species, including 4 new species. Habit, sympodial unites, type of hairs, presence of interpetalar membranes, tooth and form of calyx and heterandry are the most important characters differentiating the species. The genus Cuatresia is well represented, with 9 species including a new species to science. The original description has been completed due to newly observed characters. Branching of the plant under the soil and anatomical characters were studied. An organogenesis study was conducted for Acnistus, Dunalia, Deprea and Larnax, data show clear differences among the genera, resulting especially important for Deprea and Larnax, due to uncertainty concerning their separate status. The fused corolla and presence or absence of petalostemum are consistent characters to differentiate the two genera.
