Manipulating Cover Crop Residue to Manage the Potato Early Dying Disease.

POTATO early dying (PED) in Wisconsin is caused by an interaction of Verticillium dahliae and Pratylenchus penetrans. In previous separate experiments we demonstrated the efficacy of green manures and solarization for reducing V. dahliae and P. penetrans and enhancing potato yield. The objective of this study was to determine if covering soil with polyethylene tarps immediately after incorporating green manures enhanced the effect of cover crops on pathogens, disease, and a ‘Russet Burbank’ potato crop. Rapeseed, forage pearl millet, marigold, sorghum-sudangrass, and corn were planted in commercial potato fields in May 2004 and 2005 using a complete randomized block design and incorporated as a green manure during the third week in July. One half of each plot was covered with a clear polyethylene tarp. The tarps ripped after 18 days in 2004, but remained in place until late September in 2005. Potato was planted in the plots in 2005 and 2006. For the experiment started in 2004, solarization reduced population densities of P. penetrans but not V. dahliae. For the experiment started in 2005, solarization reduced propagules of V. dahliae in soil, but did not affect P. penetrans. Millet reduced P. penetrans in both experiments and V. dahliae in one experiment. Potato yields were not different among the cover crop treatments and greater in solarized than nonsolarized plots. The benefit of covering decomposing crop residues did not appear to be due to a biofumigation effect. Rapeseed, the most efficacious of the cover crops in laboratory studies, was generally the least effective against pathogens and suppressed potato yield and quality.
