Characterization of RB transgenic potato lines.

LATE blight of potato, caused by Phytophthora infestans, is a devastating disease effecting tuber yield and storage. Late blight resistant gene RB was isolated from Solanum bulbocastanum. Field evaluations in Toluca, Mexico with a RB containing somatic hybrid reported significant levels of resistance under intense disease pressure. Field and detached leaf tests suggest that RB transgenic lines show increased resistance. Five transgenic RB lines were recovered from susceptible breeding line MSE149-5Y. Two additional transgenic lines were recovered from Spunta and MSG227-2. Three of the MSE149-5Y lines showed increased resistance under field conditions and variable results in detached leaf evaluations using multiple P. infestans isolates individually (US6, US8, US10 and US14). Transfer of RB into additional lines with and without resistance could provide increased protection to late blight.
