Effect of Polymer Coated Urea and Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer on Yield and Quality of ‘Atlantic’ Potato under Simulated Leaching Rainfall Events in Northeast Florida.

RECENT legislated Best Management Practices have created the need to reduce off-farm nitrate movement in Northeast Florida while maintaining marketable tuber yields in potato production. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to determine the influence of fertilizer source (soluble and controlled release) and timing of leaching irrigation on yield and quality of potato in a Northeast Florida seepage irrigated production system. The experiment was conducted in 2004 and 2005 as a split-split plot with four replications. Main plots were irrigation events (0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks after planting, WAP), nitrogen source and rate (ammonium nitrate (AN) 224 kg ha-1) or controlled release fertilizer (CRF) as a polymer coated urea (196 kg ha-1). Yield and quality of ‘Atlantic’ potatoes were evaluated. For the main effect, irrigation date, marketable yields were not significantly different during the 2004 production season. During 2005, irrigation date main effects for tuber marketable yields were significantly higher in the 0WAP irrigation event (25.0 t ha-1) compared to the 4, 8 and 12 WAP irrigation events (20.7, 22.2, and 19.1 t ha-1), respectively. For the fertilizer main effect, plants in CRF treatments produced significantly higher marketable tuber yields in 2004 and 2005 (25.22 and 23.43 t ha-1) compared to plants in AN fertilizer treatments (22.98 and 20.62 t ha-1), respectively. Internal heat necrosis was significantly higher in the CRF treatments for both production years at an incidence rate of 15 and 34%. CRF release rate influences soil nutrient recharge after irrigation events which, if too slow, impacts tuber quality. However, compared to AN fertilizer treatments and over all irrigation events, CRF fertilizer treatments increased marketable tuber yields by 9 and 12% in the 2004 and 2005 production season, respectively.
