Capsicum gene bank from Southern Brazil.

MANY Capsicum landraces are cultivated in Brazil. To promote the conservation and characterization of Capsicum genetic resources, Embrapa Clima Temperado, a research institution from Southern Brazil, started collecting peppers and sweet peppers landraces in 2002. These landraces are conserved in a gene bank. This work aims to describe the state of art of this gene bank. Geographic location, popular name, history data and traits describing of the plant are recorded. Seeds are stored in a cold chamber, at 4ºC. To determine the species and multiply the seeds, each accession is cultivated in an experimental field. Plants are characterized by 50 morphological descriptors, according to the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute. Nowadays, the gene bank has 347 accessions: 286 accessions of C. baccatum, 22 accessions of C. annuum, 15 of C. chinense, three of C. frutescens and 21 of Capsicum spp. not determined yet. Eighty percent of accessions were characterized, showing a high genetic variability in each species for traits as fruit color, shape and pungency. Different popular names are given to landraces by farmers. Generally, names are given according to traits as fruit pungency, shape and color. Pungent varieties are named pimenta (pepper), pimenta forte (strong pepper), pimentinha (little pepper), comari, malagueta and pimenta-de-cheiro (smelling pepper). Varieties without pungency are called pimentão (big pepper) or pimenta doce (sweet pepper). Fruit size and shape result in names as pimenta-olho-de-pombo (pigeon eye pepper), pimentinha, pimentão-chapéu-de-padre (father hat sweet pepper), pimentão-chapéu-de-bispo (bishop hat sweet pepper) and pimenta dedo-de-moça (girl finger pepper). Besides landraces used for culinary, the gene bank conserves some ornamental ones. The great amount of the accessions (90%) are from the three Southern Brazilian States (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná).
