Tospovirus resistance in long shell life tomatoes.

IN Argentina approximately 22.000 ha of tomatoes are cultivated. The producing areas are located in five regions. The transport to the consumer centers requires good conservation of fruits. Tospoviruses are present yearly whit diferent levels of incidence. Genetic resistance is the only effective control of the disease. Resistance of lines of tomato "Platense" and a line with the Sw-5 gene (F5 Rodade x Stevens) were evaluated against the tospoviruses (TSWV, TCSV and GRSV) present in crops. The inheritance of the Sw-5 gene was chequed. The fruit color inheritance and its relation with the life in shelf in lines whit the nor gene was analyzed. A multiplex reaction was adjusted to select tospoviruses and Meloidogine resistant plants through molecular markers. "Platense" showed partial resistance against isolates of TSWV but not against GRSV. Sw-5 line showed no symptoms or hypersensitivity against the three tospoviruses tested. As already was cited, the Sw-5 is inherited like a simple dominant gene. The results for life in shelf suggest that is inherited through a few or through a single recessive gene. The fruit color inheritance responds to a simple gene and its high correlation (phi: 0.85) with the life in shelf allowed to use as morphological marker in indirect selections. Lines with resistance to Tospovirus and long shelf life were generated. We have lines F5 with long shelf life and resistance to tospoviruses.
