A tomato fruit by any other hormone: different ways to produce a fruit.

THE mechanism by which different plant hormones induce a fruit in the absence of pollination has been explored. Exogenous treatments with gibberellins and auxin as well as the genetic modification of gibberellin response in transgenic tomatoes were all able to induce the development of a seedless fruit, although with different morphological features. Hormonal treatment also mimics the DNA endoreduplication process normally accompanying fruit expansion, but normally gives fruit with altered morphology and higher TSS. The TOM1 array has been used to investigate the gene expression program leading the induction of a fruit in all these different cases. While most of the changes in the Transcriptome were shared between all fruits (activation of anabolic metabolism, cell cycle, cell wall remodelling etc.) there were quantitative and also qualitative differences. Thus specific set of genes were found induced in a hormone specific manner and still others that differentiate the hormone-induced from the pollinated fruit. Some candidates for hormone specific and stage specific genes have been selected and expression confirmed by quantitative RT PCR. Genomic regions upstream of those genes have been cloned by genome walking and will be used for a strategy to genetically engineering fruit set and development. This will on the one hand help to dissect the processes leading to a fruit and may eventually have biotechnological implications
