Taxonomy of Solanum sections Nemorense and Aculeigerum .

A monograph is in progress treating Solanum sections Nemorense Child (S. nemorense species group) and Aculeigerum Seithe (S. wendlandii species group). Both sections are unusual in Solanum because the plants bear prickles but no stellate hairs. Species of section Nemorense grow in wet to moist forests and range from lowlands of the Amazon Basin in Brazil to the eastern Andes of Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia. Section Nemorense includes four species and is differentiated from other sections by long-attenuate anthers, equal filaments, unbranched inflorescences, leaves that are either compound or simple (i.e., with leaflets not confluent along the rachis) and unifoliate or difoliate sympodial units. Section Aculeigerum has seven species, mostly disjunct from one another: five species in Mexico and Central America, one species in western Ecuador and Peru, and one species in Paraguay and southeastern Brazil. They grow in forests, forest edges, secondary thickets and at middle to low elevations. Section Aculeigerum is differentiated from other Solanum sections by a combination of oblong anthers, unequal stamens and anthers within the same flower (4 filaments and anthers equal and one filament and anther longer), plurifoliate sympodia, branched inflorescences, vine-like habit, and nearly compound leaves with confluent lobes. A preliminary phylogeny based on molecular sequence data is presented showing the placement of these two sections relative to the other major groups of Solanum subgenus Leptostemonum.
