Yield increase and growth enhancement by application of formulated Trichoderma atroviride to potato seed-pieces.

TRICHODERMA atroviride is an effective biocontrol agent and a good heavy metal sequesterer. In 2005, results of an experiment conducted in Alaska on a commercial potato field also illustrated its ability to greatly enhance the growth and yield of plants. Plant Helper ® (dust formulation), containing 10 3 cfu/g of T. atroviride spores, was applied to potato seed pieces, at a rate of 15 kg of Plant Helperā/400 kg of seed pieces/acre. A strip of the field was planted with untreated potato seed pieces as the control. Potatoes were planted in early June. By mid-July, potato plants grown from treated seed pieces were more advanced in their development than the untreated control. In mid-August, plants were randomly harvested for evaluation. Data collected were: numbers of stems, side shoots, and stolon; plant and root weight (fresh, dry); numbers and total weight of progeny potato tubers and numbers of marketable potatoes (>0.2 kg). Progeny tubers were also examined for signs diseases. Data were analyzed using the Student t-test. No lesion or sign of diseases were found on any of the progeny tubers examined. No significant difference was found between T. atroviride treated and the control to the numnbers of stolon and progeny potato tubers/plant. However, a significant difference was found between T. atroviride treated potatoes and the untreated control with respect to plant weigh (fresh, dry), root weigh (fresh, dry), numbers of stems and sideshoots, total weigh of progeny tubesr, and total numbers and weigh of marketable potatoes. In conclusion, T. atroviride treated seed-pieces produce significantly larger plants and more marketable potatoes.
