Microsatellite variation and population structure in tomatillo (Physalis philadelphica Lam.).

A better understanding of the phylogeographic origin and population structure of tomatillo and its wild relatives will help guide the use, future sampling, and conservation of wild and cultivated germplasm. Knowledge of the population structure of tomatillo is also needed to reliably perform association mapping studies of agronomically important traits. We assessed variation at 12 microsatellite loci in a core sample of 69 individuals from 37 weedy and cultivated populations from Mexico and Guatemala. Surprisingly, we find little evidence for population or phylogeographic structure among the accessions. This suggests diffuse domestication of tomatillo throughout south-central Mexico and/or extensive gene flow among cultivars and weedy forms.
