Conference Wide van der Weerden, G.M. [1], Barendse, G.W.M. [1]. Eggplant database, A European Central Crop Database. EARLY 2000 we started to create a database which contained the then available listings of eggplants (Solanum melongena) and related species. To create such a database was one of the objectives of EGGNET, a project funded by the European Union. The aim was to create a database that provides information about eggplant genetic resources in Europe to all interested parties such as plant breeders, research institutes, universities and amateur growers. At the time when the proposal for the EGGNET project was approved by the European Union it was not foreseen that another initiative (EPGRIS) would start with the aim to establish a European Internet Search Catalogue (EURISCO). These developments after the start of EGGNET necessitated a review of the Eggplant database. In 2003, it was therefore decided to overhaul the Eggplant database in order to follow these international developments. We created a relatively simple platform independent, web-based searchable Eggplant database which includes searchable coupling between passport data, primary and secondary characterization data, illustrations and literature. On the basis of the platform independent web-interfaces and authentication data can be entered and modified by different contributors worldwide. External inputs of data are error checked by the program, sent for review to the system administrator and subsequently added to the database. Modules for data input, editing, export of data files as well as reviewing data have been developed. The database search form has different search and filter definitions. It also allows a detailed search based on specific passport data selected as a search criterion. Similar web interfaces were developed for our Solanaceae database.
