Performance of Megachip in the Dominican Republic.

THERE is a strong need to identify chipping varieties that can out-perform Atlantic in the lowland tropics. The Dominican Republic is one location to trial chipping varieties, being located between 19 and 20 degrees N. San Juan de la Maguana and Villa Vasquez are 400 and 55 meters above sea level, respectively. Heat is a significant factor in Villa Vasquez as night temperatures exceeded 20oC 17 out of 101 nights and exceeded 30oC 88 out of 101 days. Megachip, at the replicated trial level in 2004, performed better than Atlantic. Megachip total yield was higher than Atlantic in both San Juan (118%) and Villa Vasquez (152%). Megachip had high average specific gravities (1.088) in Villa Vasquez and (1.085) in San Juan. Megachip also had excellent color and low internal defects for chipping directly from the field. Megachip has potential to improve on Atlantic as a low elevation tropical chipper and will be planted on a semi-commercial basis in the Dominican Republic in November 2006.
