Abstract Detail

Coffee Genomics - Morning

Charrier, Andre [1].

The International Coffee Genomics Network (ICGN).

AT the initiative of Dr. NAIDU (Coffee Board of India), two international workshops held in Bangalore (India) in January and October 2004 led to the launch of an International Coffee Genomics Initiative. In order to implement this initiative, an interim working group organised in Paris (France) in April 2005 the founding meeting of the International Coffee Genomics Network (ICGN) attended by 30 scientists from universities, research institutes and the industry in the coffee-producing and coffee-consuming countries. ICGN will focus on the genetic and molecular bases of important biological traits in coffee that are relevant to the growers, processors and consumers. This knowledge is fundamental to allow efficient use and preservation of coffee genetic resources for the development of improved cultivars that are superior in terms of quality and reduced economic and environmental costs. ICGN represents an international commitment to work jointly for the development of common sets of genetic and genomic resources. After an evaluation of the current status of international coffee research, 6 working groups have been constituted: WG1: Markers and genetic diversity WG2: Markers and genetic mapping WG3: BAC libraries and physical maps WG4: ESTs and transcriptional profiling WG5: Tools for functional analysis WG6: Bio-informatics The ICGN seeks to foster collaboration among its members and within the broader coffee research community through: i) A steering committee of expert scientists, ii) A web site for information on member activities and genetic/genome resources available (site: http://www.coffeegenome.org), and iii) Coordination meetings held in 2006 and organised in conjunction with international associations such as the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in Trieste and the International Association on Coffee Science (ASIC) in Montpellier, with a view to mobilising resources to support joint research.
