Coffee Genomics - Morning

Tanksley, Steve [1].

Coffee genomics in the context of the international SOL Initiative.

THE euasterids are one of the largest subgroups of the flowering plants, with more than 75,000 species. Many familiar crop plants, flowers, shrubs, and trees belong to this group, including tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, pepper, petunia, tobacco, sweet potatoes, olives, sunflowers, lettuce, coffee, snapdragons, and sesame. The Euasterids also represent a distinct clade of angiosperms, distant from both the model species Arabidopsis and rice. The International SOL Initiative is dedicated to developing genomic and genetics resources that can underpin biological research and breeding in all euasterid species. It is also intended to help develop networks of scientists worldwide that can collaborate, share resources and generate funding opportunities, which might not otherwise be available. Among the euasterids, coffee is one of the most intensively studied species. Recent EST-sequencing in coffee has revealed a nearly gene-for-gene relationship with tomato and other solanaceous species. Moreover, comparative mapping, based on orthologous gene sets, is revealing large stretches of synteny between coffee and solanaceous species. The implications of these finding are that genomic, genetic and breeding information may soon be readily shared amongst all these species. The result will be a penetrating look at the forces that have led to morphological diversification and an acceleration of genomics-based research in coffee. Also, by viewing coffee as part of a large network of research and discovery, we create a worldwide network of more than 1000 researches that will have new opportunities for funding and stimulating interactions.
