Solanum Taxonomy - Morning

Jacobs, M.J.M. [1], van den Berg, R.G. [2], Vosman, Ben [1].

Phylogenetic structure of Solanum section Petota, the wild relatives of the potato.

THE tuber-bearing Solanum species (Solanum section Petota) form a group of about 200 species, including the wild progenitors of the cultivated potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). These species have traditionally been classified in 19 series, mainly using morphological characters. Many taxonomic issues remained to be solved, however. In order to better elucidate the structure within the group of tuber-bearing species a study was initiated within the Centre of Biosystem Genomics (CBSG), a joint venture of universities, research institutes and breeding companies in The Netherlands. In this project the largest AFLP dataset to date (approximately 5000 genotypes representing 172 taxa) was produced, making use of the collections of the major potato genebanks. cpDNA sequences were generated for a subset of these accessions. The analyses of these AFLP and sequence data provide a comprehensive view on the phylogeny of the group. Problems in the analysis of such a large dataset are discussed.
