Solanum Taxonomy - Morning Rodriguez, Aaron [1]. A review of Solanum (Solanaceae) in Mexico. SOLANUM (Solanaceae) is one of the largest genera of angiosperms with about 1,250 species. The greatest diversity of Solanum is found in Mexico, Central and South America, Australia, and Africa, but it also occurs in North America and Eurasia. At present, 950 species have been reported for the New World. In this paper, a general inventory of Solanum is given for Mexico based on herbarium specimens held in the following herbaria: CHAPA, ENCB, F, GUADA, IBUG, IEB, MEXU, MICH, PTIS, WIS and ZEA. About 131 species of Solanum are estimated to occur in Mexico and the most diverse group is section Petota with 28 species. Solanum tuberosum and S. lycopersicum are important vegetable crops nationwide, while S. betaceum and S. muricatum are regionaly cultivated for their edible fruits. Furthermore, S. laxum, S. seafortianum, S. wendlandi and S. wrightii are ornamentals. Finally, S. capsicoides, S. corymbosum, S. marginatum, and S. sysimbrifolium are naturalized species.
